Circuit Analysis
The sum of currents entering a node equals the sum of currents leaving the node.
ΣIin = ΣIout
The sum of all voltages around a closed loop equals zero.
ΣV = 0
Total resistance equals the sum of individual resistances.
Rtotal = R₁ + R₂ + R₃ + ...
Reciprocal of total resistance equals sum of reciprocals.
1/Rtotal = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + 1/R₃ + ...
Components in a line
Components side by side
Series + Parallel mix
Series: Same current flows through all components. Voltages add up to source voltage.
Parallel: Same voltage across all components. Currents add up to total current.
Combination: Mix of series and parallel rules. Solve step by step.
Parallel Resistance Shortcut (2 resistors only):
Starting from: 1/Rtotal = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂
Find common denominator: 1/Rtotal = (R₂ + R₁)/(R₁ × R₂)
Flip both sides: Rtotal = (R₁ × R₂)/(R₁ + R₂)
This formula ONLY works for exactly 2 resistors in parallel!
